ONGOING RECOVERY | COMMITTED FUNDING
The following list provides a summary of funding committed to the recovery of the Lesser Slave River region by government agencies
Municipal Affairs
- Support for the development of Provincial Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Layers and primary key protocols to facilitate interoperability during emergency events
- Support for the emergency warning system
- Support for the development of a strategic regional emergency plan with First Nations and emergency agencies
- Support for the development of specialized administrative training for emergencies
- Development of recovery planning models and guidelines based on climate change extreme events
- Provision of extra building and safety codes inspections and presence
Municipal Affairs/Sustainable Resource Development
- Support for the development of effective communication systems during emergency events to provide a robust early warning system for the region
- Support for the Slave Lake Region in achieving a FireSmart community
Finance and Enterprise
- Support for the development of clear insurance provisions with respect to fire, disaster and education
- Assessment of the need for insurance coordination strategies for large scale disasters Finance and Enterprise
Service Alberta
- Monitoring of the region's rental situation under the Residential Tenancy Act
Culture and Community Spirit
- Support of the region's efforts to recognize the efforts during the response and recovery of its citizens, neighbouring communities, supportive municipalities, province, federal government and business
Housing and Urban Affairs
- Support of the development of permanent housing
Independent System Operation (ISO)
- Assurance of reporting to utility companies to remove brush that can affect power lines
Sustainable Resource Development
- Investigation of the transfer of SRD lands in area of Hwy 88 and Hwy 2 to Municipal District of Lesser Slave River control
- Support of access to GIS Implementation and Legacy from fire and non-patented lands, and to Geographic Land Information Management Planning System (GLIMPS)
Employment and Immigration
- Employment of Alberta Job Corps or Work Force Development to support reconstruction and initiatives (such as FireSmart)
Executive Council (Slave Lake Region Recovery Task Force)
- Facilitation of regional discussions between the Town of Slave Lake and MD of Lesser Slave River to support regional recovery
Alberta Environment
- Provision of advice on approvals required to ensure the municipal water supply requirements and navigational safety of watercraft in the Lesser Slave River
- Ongoing environmental monitoring

HELPING THE HELPLESS
When reality set in and it became apparent that homecoming was weeks away for Lesser Slave residents, Animal Rescue was tasked with finding, feeding and relocating pets left behind in the panic. Read about it here.

Whether motivated by duty or led by their own moral compass, a variety of official and homemade heroes stepped in to help the citizens of Lesser Slave River douse the flames and begin to heal. These are their stories.
