CULTURAL EVENTS
A region of vivid culture and history, the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River’s scenic natural attractions are complemented by its rich culture and fascinating heritage. The community’s rich ethnic tapestry is on display at a variety of cultural celebrations and special events like festivals, fairs, rodeos, and native cultural activities.

Alberta Open Sand Sculpture Championship & Beach Volleyball Tournament
Taking place on Devonshire Beach in Lesser Slave River, the Open Sand Sculpture Championship began over 10 years ago, and has since transformed into one of the most highly anticipated events in the Slave Lake region, attracting visitors of all ages. Guests are invited to showcase their sand castle sculpting skills at the main event, or partake in a variety of family-friendly activities and entertainment scheduled throughout the day.
Annual Songbird Festival
Held at the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation in Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, the Annual Songbird Festival takes place in early June and offers educational activities for the entire family. Visitors can participate in workshops, tours, and guided hikes. This event features plenty of free children's activities including face painting and crafts.
Slave Lake Riverboat Daze
Slave Lake Riverboat Daze is an annual summer festival that takes place in early July and includes a boat race and a host of attractions to provide fun and entertainment for all interests and ages.
In addition to these events, local museums and interpretive centres offer a fascinating insight into aboriginal and modern history alike. They include the High Prairie & District Museum & Historical Society, the Kinosayo Museum, the Pioneer Thresherman's Association in High Prairie, and the Native Cultural Arts Museum in Grouard, while the Native Friendship Centre in Slave Lake offers a variety of programs and displays Aboriginal crafts and artifacts.
