The Municipal District of Lesser Slave River recognizes that a dynamic, active, and healthy community requires programs, services, and amenities for all stages of life. This is achieved through a focus on recreational, social, and cultural opportunities – all elements that help to make the Lesser Slave River a community well beyond the ordinary.

Residents are welcome and encouraged to utilize one of the many local excellent recreation facilities, described below, which are available at reasonable rates for meetings, recreation programs, fund raising events, social activities, and much more!

Boat Launches
The municipality maintains a boat launch on Lesser Slave River, on the outskirts of the Town of Slave Lake. There is no charge to launch your boat and there is ample parking for vehicles and trailers. There are also launches located at Cross, Fawcett, and Lawrence Lakes, Canyon Creek and Canyon Creek Harbour, and at the Point Boat Launch in Slave Lake.

Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation
The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation provides year-round facilities for rent and a variety of interpretive and educational events and environmental education school programs.

Canyon Creek Arena
The Canyon Creek Arena houses an outdoor hockey rink and is available for event booking year-round. Click here to view the 2012 arena schedule.

Flatbush Community Hall
Home to the Flatbush Library, the Flatbush Community Hall is located along Highway 44 in the Hamlet of Flatbush. This facility can accommodate approximately 350 people and the grounds include ball diamonds, a newly constructed playground, and ample parking. Equipped with showers and partial kitchen amenities, this venue allows for both indoor and outdoor participation.

Flatbush Royal Canadian Legion #137 Hall
The Flatbush Legion Branch #137 Hall is available for rental and can accommodate up to 65 people. The hall has full kitchen facilities, pool and shuffleboard tables, and a patio.

Smith Agriplex and Arena
The Smith Agriplex is located on Smith’s beautifully-decorated, rustic main street. Host to a number of community events, the facility offers a full kitchen, dance hall, curling rink, and ice arena.

Widewater Community Complex
Located in scenic Wagner, Alberta, the Widewater Complex provides year-round rental facilities including an auditorium, kitchen, bar, ball diamonds, and lakeside camping.

Libraries
The Municipal District of Lesser Slave River is pleased to be part of the Peace Library System. Residents can access local library facilities at the Smith Community Library, Flatbush Community Library, and the Slave Lake Regional Library.
