The Municipal District of Lesser Slave River recognizes that a dynamic, active, and healthy community requires programs, services, and amenities for all stages of life. This is achieved through a focus on recreational, social, and cultural opportunities – all elements that help to make the Lesser Slave River a community well beyond the ordinary.
Residents are welcome and encouraged to utilize one of the many local excellent recreation facilities, described below, which are available at reasonable rates for meetings, recreation programs, fund raising events, social activities, and much more!
Other Noteworthy Facilities & Venues
|The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation (BCBC) is the only educational and research facility in the world strategically located to study boreal birds on their breeding grounds. The BCBC offers 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor exhibits, interpretive programming, a gift shop and office space. It also provides research space and computer work stations for staff, volunteers, and visiting researchers and educators.
The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation provides year-round facilities for rent and a variety of interpretive and educational events and environmental education school programs.
|The Nest is a peaceful, sun-washed timber-frame building located next to the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation within beautiful Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park.
The Nest has room for 10 guests with four bunk-bed rooms and two queen-bed rooms. In addition, it has two washrooms with showers and a large common room with full kitchen facilities and fireplace. Outside is a large deck with barbeque, firepit and picnic table.

When it’s available for rent, you can reserve your spot online at reserve.albertaparks.ca or call the toll free number at 1.866.427.3582. The cost is $250 per night and the building can house a maximum of 10 people.
|The municipality maintains a boat launch on Lesser Slave River, on the outskirts of the Town of Slave Lake. There is no charge to launch your boat and there is ample parking for vehicles and trailers. There are also launches located at Cross, Fawcett, and Lawrence Lakes, Canyon Creek and Canyon Creek Harbour, and at the Point Boat Launch in Slave Lake.|
|Free to the public, the Canyon Creek Arena houses an indoor hockey rink and is available for event booking during skating season. The arena is open every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 6:00 and 9:00 pm. Operating hours during High Prairie School Division days may vary.

|With a scenic view of the Lesser Slave Lake, this hotel was once the stomping grounds for commercial fishermen, and was even used as a fish hatchery and processing plant. Located 25 km west of Slave Lake on Highway #2, the Canyon Creek Hotel hosts its popular Steak Night every Friday.
|Officially opened July 1, 2016, the Canyon Creek Wildfire Legacy Park was created as a tribute to the region's bravery, resiliency, and hope in the wake of the devastating May 2011 wildfires. With the collaboration and support of the Red Cross and the Widewater Athletic Association, this rest area and one-of-a-kind playspace was built for the benefit of all who live, work, and play in the region.

|Home to the Flatbush Library, the Flatbush Community Complex is located along Highway 44 in the Hamlet of Flatbush. This facility can accommodate approximately 350 people and the grounds include ball diamonds, a well-appointed playground, and ample parking. Equipped with full kitchen amenities, this venue allows for both indoor and outdoor participation.

|The Flatbush Legion Branch #137 Hall is available for rental and can accommodate up to 65 people. The hall has full kitchen facilities, pool and shuffleboard tables, and a patio.
|The Legacy Centre is the home of the Slave Lake Child Care Society and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks of Canada Lodge No. 379. The Legacy Centre boasts social gathering and banquet facilities, child care, a permanent interpretive wildfire exhibit and enhanced performing arts infrastructure.|

|The Lesser Slave Regional Visitor Information Center is located at 12 Poplar Drive - on the highway due east of the Town of Slave Lake. The facility offers a boardroom for rent that holds up to 15 people.
