The boreal region of Lesser Slave River is certainly beautiful. However, the proximity of many communities to forested areas can pose a threat to lives, homes and livelihoods when certain conditions conspire. Here are a few simple steps you can take to safeguard your family both before and during an emergency situation.01 Make sure your family’s current contact information is on file with the MD’s Emergency Notification System, which will automatically call in the case of an emergency. The interactive enrolment form is in the Emergency section of mdlsr.ca.
02 Bookmark the municipal website at mdlsr.ca – or MD social media sites – to access emergency updates as they happen. Facebook.com/mdlsr124 is a popular municipal social media channel.
03 Monitor local radio stations such as Lake FM (92.7) for breaking news or instructions related to an emergency event.
04 Download the Alberta Wildfire app from iTunes or Google Play (depending upon your device) for real-time alerts on wildfires throughout the province.
What happens if evacuation becomes necessary?
01 Know the location of the evacuation centre closest to your community. There are several throughout the community, and they are listed in the Emergency section of mdlsr.ca.
02 Create your own 72-hour emergency kit to ensure you have certain necessities at a moment’s notice. A checklist can be found in the Emergency section of mdlsr.ca.
